What would winter be without snow and ice? There would be no snowmen, ice skating or exciting snow wars with the neighbors. Thanks to them the coldest time of the year can become one of the most fun. But … it is always important to be careful, so that the fun of the snow does not freeze the little ones.
When the snow arrives, it is as if the joy of winter comes. After the first snow has passed and the snow is already on the ground, all the children in the neighborhood soon leave their homes. It is hard to resist the temptation to go out and play, take a sled and slide, or start a snowball war.
How much emotion for them! But also, how many nerves our parents feel when they think they can get sick, freeze or suffer an accident. That’s why in Life and Health we give you some tips to avoid accidents and diseases during this season.
Keep them warm. When it comes to the cold, it’s better than clothes to keep your children warm outside the house and not missing. Dressing them with several layers is the best strategy so that they can remove some of them when they get hot or get wet. Cotton is not a good material to keep your children warm; wool, cashmere ( cashmere in English) or synthetic materials such as “fleece” are better.
It covers your entire body. Start by putting them long and thermal underwear. Then, one or two shirts, divers or polo shirts, preferably with a high collar (some call it “turtle”). On top, jacket and thick pants, it is better if they are waterproof. And never forget to protect the extremities that are most sensitive to the cold: socks or thick socks and waterproof shoes for the feet; gloves for hands; cap for the head; and scarf to cover the neck, mouth and nose.
Use sunscreen. Yes, even if it sounds absurd, it is important to apply sunscreen to your children before going out to play in the snow. It has been proven that it can reflect up to 85% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays and cause burns worthy of a strong summer.
Remove the snow . When snow builds up in front of the door or around the car and does not let them out of the house, many children would like to help their parents clean it. Although it seems a fun task, it is not for the little ones, because at any moment they can hurt a muscle by using a shovel loaded with snow. They can begin to collaborate with this task when they are of school age, but it is not recommended that they do so before.
Prepare them for a long day . If your children are going to be out in the snow all day, hand them a briefcase with extra shoes, socks and gloves so they can be changed when they feel wet. Add something hot to drink in a thermos, and something to eat like a chocolate or a granola bar so that the calories keep them energized in the cold.
Prevent them from freezing . Many children and adolescents have a hard time realizing that they are freezing until it is too late. And for parents it is difficult to measure exactly how much time you can afford to be away from home, because everything depends on the cold you are doing. That is why it is important that you watch frequently that your gloves and shoes are not wet, and that the nose and ears are not very red. And teach them that when they feel the cold is bothering them and the fingers and toes, the nose or the ears hurt, it’s time to look for warmth at home.
And if they freeze?There is a way to know in time that your children are starting to freeze. Look at the parts of the body most sensitive to the cold: the toes and hands, the ears, the nose and the cheeks. As soon as you see that the skin of these parts becomes extremely white and loses sensitivity (as if you were asleep), put your son into the house immediately, remove all the wet clothes and stick the frozen part against another part of the body that is hot (like the stomach or chest) You can also submerge the frozen part under water, but only if it is warm, until you regain sensitivity. And if you notice that the frozen part is taking a color between yellow and gray, take it to a doctor’s center urgently.
Thus, with the necessary care and prepared for the cold, the little ones can spend a season full of great emotions.
